Radial Inflow Turbine for Turbocharger

Turbo Solutions completed a clean-sheet design of a medium-boost turbocharger radial inflow turbine for an original equipment manufacturer. The design challenges included moving the peak efficiency islands to lower U/C for better engine matching and carefully balancing aerodynamic and performance goals to ensure a long-life, very efficient design. The scope included aerodynamic design and CFD analysis, mechanical design and structural analysis, and detailed solid modeling. We completed full 360-degree CFD analysis of the multi-port wastegated volute, rotor, and exhaust diffuser to broaden the efficiency islands and position the peak efficiency at a specific U/C to optimize the engine cycle. Complete solid models of casing and rotor were released to the client for fabrication and test. Rig testing indicated that the turbine meets all performance goals and the design has been released for production.
